Map of North American Hut Systems

This map of North American hut systems is h2h’s modest mapping experiment.  We  focused first on the USA, and gradually, with your help,  have located many Canadian hut systems.  Help is need to be sure the Canadian hut markers are complete and accurate.  With help, we may begin to locate hut systems and/or village-to-village opportunities in Mexico.  As of January 2021 we have identified 37 operational hut systems in USA, 22 in Canada, and 7  in planning stages.

We are focusing the hut systems, i.e. those with: three or more backcountry huts (cabins, yurts and lodges) intentionally connected by trails and designed to be visited in a sequence over a period of days by walking, skiing, or biking.  Some groups of huts that do not fit this definition are included if they come close and/or if the offer interesting models that approximate hut-to-hut treks.  See marker codes below.

We are not trying to map individual huts and shelters, climbers huts, and other stand-alone, unconnected facilities. We will explore coordinating efforts with some of the others who are mapping and listing huts.  Another scope restriction is that only hut systems accessible by human power are included.  Consistent with scope of hut2hut.info, those accessible by helicopter or snow machines are not included here.

Check out the map below and follow the map marker links to the web sites of hut systems.  Note: to see the markers more clearly, zoom out or zoom in on the map by clicking +/- in the lower right corner, and can expand the map to fill full screen by clicking in upper right corner.

Hut or Yurt System — A system of three or more enclosed refuges connected by trail

Hut or Yurt System — A system of three or more enclosed refuges connected by trail system, usually with some form of food (or cooking facilities) and lodging. Level of amenities varies greatly.  These are the key focus of this map.

Links to some existing maps of huts systems – Rather than duplicate the work of others, we provide a marker and a link to existing web maps in our geographic scope, e.g. Tenth Mountain Division Huts Association (link to multiple cooperating member hut systems on one useful map), Colorado Alliance of Huts and Yurts members, and Alpine Club of Canada, and beyond, e.g. Norway & New Zealand.

Future Huts — Huts being planned or constructed; not yet operational.

SECOND PRIORITY FOR MAPPING:

Huts, Lodges, Cabins, and Yurts — A wide range of structure and accommodation types which are NOT connected by a trail system or which (usually) have less than three connected huts. These are generally out of scope for us, but we do map a few that we think represent interesting types or trends we wish to follow.

OUT OF SCOPE:  Shelter Systems — Open, often three sided shelters, for example the 250 + shelters along the  Appalachian Trail and the approximately 65 on the Long Trail in Vermont.

Note: These categories overlap somewhat and it can be tricky to accurately categorize a system.  Markers give the approximate location of the huts or hut systems, or the location of the associated group’s headquarters.  They are not GPS coordinates for individual huts in a system, and cannot be used for navigation purposes.

Consult the website included in the map marker for more precise details about number and location of huts, for maps and hut GPS coordinates, amenities, reservations, etc.  Icons courtesy of:
